Aftercare

How to get the darkest henna stain

A little care goes a long way. Follow these simple steps after your appointment and your henna will deepen into a rich, long-lasting colour you’ll love in every photo.

Be patient — the colour keeps developing

A fresh stain starts bright orange, then darkens over the next 24–48 hours into a deep maroon or near-black. Its richest colour appears a day or two after removal — so don’t judge it right away.

Step by step

Your aftercare routine

From the moment your design is applied to the day after removal.

  1. 1

Leave the paste on as long as possible

Keep the henna paste on your skin until it is fully dry — at least 6–8 hours. Overnight is best for the deepest colour.

  2. 2

Seal it with lemon & sugar

Once the henna has dried, gently dab on a lemon juice + sugar mix. This keeps the paste moist and helps it release more dye into the skin.

  3. 3

    Warm the design

Take warm smoke by dry-roasting cloves and hold your design over the warmth. Heat helps the stain develop richer and faster.

  4. 4

Scrape — never wash — it off

Do not use water to remove the paste. Scrape it off gently with a little oil once it has done its work.

  5. 5

    Apply balm after removal

After scraping, rub in Vicks or a natural balm to lock in warmth and protect the fresh stain.

  6. 6

Keep it dry for 24 hours

Avoid contact with water for 24 hours after removal. When you shower, cover the design with a plastic bag or gloves.

Do

  • Keep the paste on 6–8 hours (overnight is ideal)
  • Dab on lemon + sugar once the henna is dry
  • Warm the design with smoke from dry-roasted cloves
  • Scrape the paste off with oil, not water
  • Apply Vicks or a natural balm after removal

Don’t

  • Don’t apply lotion or oil before getting henna
  • Don’t wash the paste off with water
  • Don’t let the design touch water for 24 hours
  • Don’t rush — removing it too early lightens the stain

DIY cones

Caring for your henna cones

Ordered organic henna cones to use at home? Keep them fresh with these tips.

  • Freeze cones as soon as you receive them, and whenever not in use.
  • Let a cone defrost naturally for 20–30 minutes before use.
  • At room temperature, organic henna cones last 2–3 days.
  • Kept frozen, cones stay good for up to 6 months.
